Predators Among Us
Recently I was at a place of business where there was a group of men standing outside. As we were talking, a young sister (about 13-14 years old) walked up and she was well developed to be her age. As she was attempting to walk in the building, one of the “brothers” hollered out “hey shorty” and was trying to “holla” at her. In other words, he was cat calling the young lady. He, himself was at least in his early to mid 20’s. This was nothing short of an act of a predator. Yes, this is a problem.
I intervened and she thanked me as she went inside. I then turned to the guy and asked him did he know that she was essentially a child? He said “yeah” but she had the body of a grown a** woman and it was “bangin”. When I checked him on that, he just walked off. Brothers, we’ve got to do this more. It is our responsibility to cover and protect. We can’t expect the title of “King” and then cower like a peasant when duty calls. Imagine if this was your sister, cousin etc…..
What??? I don’t care what kind of body she has. No right thinking man would want to do ANYTHING to harm a child….PERIOD!!! The burden of responsibility and accountability rest on the the ADULT! What kind of man/woman is it that would be sexually attracted to a child? A PEDOPHILE!!!
The sad part about this is that we have predators just like this in so many of our families, neighborhoods, circles etc…. and they have existed for years. What’s even sadder? As a culture, we have a tendency to just sweep issues like this under the rug and not confront the predator for the fear of rocking the boat of a popular family member or member of the community. As a result, our girls suffer (boys too at lesser numbers) and the consequences carry far into adulthood…..Just check these statistics out from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center…….
One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually
abused before they turn 18 years old
34% of people who sexually abuse a child are family
12.3% of women were age 10 or younger at the time
of their first rape/victimization, and 30% of women
were between the ages of 11 and 17
27.8% of men were age 10 or younger at the time
of their first rape/victimization
More than one-third of women who report being raped
before age 18 also experience rape as an adult
96% of people who sexually abuse children are
male, and 76.8% of people who sexually abuse
children are adults
Just as some of us rally to hold celebrity sexual predators and pedophiles (ie. R.Kelly allegedly) accountable, we also need to hold uncle Ray Ray, Tequan and a host of other “family & friends” to the same standard(s) as well. Silence is no longer an acceptable coping mechanism. We’ve sacrificed too many of our own and the price far too high.
